Apparently you’re not supposed to toss your old phone charging cables in the trash, and apparently a lot of people are unaware of that. After all, they are made with similar components to other electronics that need to be specially disposed of.

Refurbished tech seller Decluttr conducted a survey on Reddit to see how many people properly dispose of their charging cables. Of the 2,400 responses, 55 percent said they dispose of old charging cables in the regular garbage. Just 25 percent reported taking cables to a tech recycling center to be properly disposed of, while 17 percent said they did “other.”

Additionally, 3 percent of respondents said they contacted local authorities for information on how to dispose of defunct charging cables. For the rest of us, here’s a handy guide from Lifehacker on how to do it properly.
