There’s a new advertisement circulating right now in which Tom Hanks voices his support for a dental plan — or what looks like Tom Hanks.

But according to the actor, that’s not him in the video. Hanks took to Instagram over the weekend to warn his fans that it is an AI version of him and he is not affiliated with it in any way. He did not note the company or organization behind the ad, and as of Monday had not responded to media requests for comment.

Improper uses of artificial intelligence like this is one of the key sticking points in the recent strikes in Hollywood. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike in May and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) began striking in July, with restrictions on AI use in the industry prominent among their demands. The agreement that recently ended the WGA strike prohibits the use of AI-written content in source material. SAG-AFTRA is still on strike, with actors’ rights and compensation regarding AI-generated likenesses among their top concerns.
