How did a French naval officer’s workout become a security threat?

Answer: It was publicly visible on Strava.

This isn’t the first time that logging a workout has unintentionally revealed important safety information, and it likely won’t be the last. A French naval officer accidentally revealed the location of his ship when he went for a run on its deck.

The officer, identified only as Arthur, logged his run on the workout tracking app Strava on March 13. This wouldn’t have been a problem except that he had it configured to display publicly, rather than keeping his activity private. By looking at the location of his run, anyone could see the location of the ship he was on, posing a potential threat to the vessel’s safety. The ship in question, the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, was about 62 miles off the Turkish coast at that time. It was en route to the eastern Mediterranean in light of the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran.
