How did a roboticist make a humanoid robot absolutely terrifying?

Answer: By making it crawl like a spider.

Just in time for Halloween, one AI and robotics enthusiast has found a way to turn a humanoid robot into nightmare fuel in seconds. Logan Olson got his hands on a G1 unit from Unitree this spring and has shared many videos of the results as he tinkers on it in his workshop. But his latest video turns it into something quite unnerving.

Appropriately released in time for Halloween, Olson’s video shows the G1 robot going from a standing to a crawl position in a matter of seconds. While it’s impressive how quickly the robot moves, it is equally disconcerting to see it assume the shape of a creepy-crawly. He has another video of it crawling around like an unsettling human-robot-spider that we’re all hoping he doesn’t take trick-or-treating on Friday night.
