How does this smartphone get 6 days of battery life?

Answer: By not sharing your data.

It’s a stark reminder of just how much our phones are spying on us. The MC03 smartphone from German company Punkt can last for days on a single charge because it keeps background app activity to a minimum.

Most apps spend a lot of time harvesting data even when you’re not using them, so it’s a significant drain on your device’s battery. The MC03 has its own suite of communication and productivity apps built by Punkt that keep all their data to themselves. The device runs an Android open source project-based operating system called AphyOS, so users can download some apps from the Google Play Store if they really want them. Those apps are sandboxed on the device though, so they can’t get any data from other apps.

This lack of background activity for apps equals huge battery savings — after showing the device off at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas for four days earlier this year, it still had 57 percent battery life without recharging. “The battery capacity is actually incredible. You have actually four or five, even up to six days of battery life because the whole OS is so light, and we didn't have to put in a 10 times bigger battery,” said Yanapi Senaud, global head of sales and marketing at Punkt.
