How has Ukraine’s Twitter account responded to Russia’s invasion?

Answer: By encouraging people to support removing Russia from the platform.

After months of speculation and increasing tensions, Russia on Thursday began invading Ukraine. While the U.S. and European Union responded with heavy sanctions on Russia, the official Twitter account of Ukraine had a response of its own.

The verified account tweeted Thursday morning calling on the denizens of Twitter to band together in support of kicking the official Russian account off the platform. “[N]o place for an aggressor like Russia on Western social media platforms,” the post said, going on to state that the country should not be allowed to promote itself while its actions are taking Ukrainian lives.

The post had more than 120,000 likes and 3,600 replies in the U.S. at the time of this writing. The official account of Russia has stuck to its usual content of sharing images and updates on Russian holidays, history and culture, so it’s unlikely Twitter will find the country in violation of its rules and thus eligible to be removed from the platform.
