One thing that almost every Instagram and/or Facebook user can agree on is that they don’t like parent company Meta’s algorithm that populates their feeds. That’s because it likes to show them content that it thinks they will like from accounts that they don’t follow. Users just want to see the stuff that they select themselves from the people that they select themselves.
Mark Zuckerberg and crew, however, have apparently missed the memo. Or rather, they got the memo and immediately proceeded to make a paper airplane out of it and throw it at the trash can. In response to recent user complaints, head of Instagram Adam Mosseri said in a video “we’re going to continue to try and get better at recommendations because we think it’s one of the most effective and important ways to help creators reach more people.” So basically, they’re going to keep recommending content even though users said to stop.
Then, in Meta’s second quarter earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that they’re still not listening. After stating in prepared remarks that roughly 15 percent of a user's current feed is populated by content and accounts that they don’t follow, he said, “we expect these numbers to more than double by the end of next year.” Let the Twitter rants begin.
