Its adventure began last month when American Airlines passenger John Lewis lost his wallet, in which the AirTag was kept, on a flight. Lewis said he realized his wallet was gone when he reached his final destination and went to get his rental car. He contacted American Airlines, but they said they had cleaned the plane and were unable to locate his wallet.

But, Lewis was still able to track the AirTag that was inside it, and the evidence suggests that it was definitely still on the plane. Lewis said that over the next few days, he watched the AirTag take trips to at least 35 different cities. American Airlines eventually located the AirTag between two seat cushions, and Lewis said that one of his credit cards was used in the same city where he got off that plane, so it’s likely that someone took the wallet and left the AirTag behind.
