It’s no secret that Californians love electric vehicles, but it turns out that they love them so much they beat the state’s timeline for adoption. California had set a goal of reaching 1.5 million EVs on its roads by 2025, a number that was achieved this year, two years ahead of schedule.
Unsurprisingly, Tesla holds the largest share of EV purchases in California. In just the first quarter of 2023, Californians purchased 33,205 Model Ys and 19,989 Model 3s. The Chevrolet Bolt EUV was the third most popular EV in 2023, with 5,292 units sold in the first quarter.
“California is setting the bar for climate action — and we're achieving our goals years ahead of schedule thanks to unprecedented investments secured in partnership with the Legislature," said Gov. Gavin Newsom. "We're making real progress on the world's most ambitious plan to end the tailpipe so our kids and grandkids are left with a cleaner, healthier planet."
