NordPass recently surveyed 1,509 users about their password habits, and for the first time in years people reported having fewer passwords to manage. When the password manager began collecting this data in 2020, users reported managing an average of 80 passwords each. Within eight months, however, that number had increased to 100 and has continued climbing in the years since. The average number of passwords peaked in 2024 at 168 for personal use and 87 for business.

But in the last year the average has decreased for the first time, with the average last month coming in at 120 personal and 67 work passwords. NordPass Head of Product Karolis Arbačiauskas thinks the rise of single sign-on and passkeys as an alternative to passwords is the culprit. “Users are increasingly opting for the convenience of logging in through single sign-on (SSO) with their primary account such as Google, Apple, or Facebook,” he said. “The growing adoption and promotion of password alternatives like passkeys, Apple Face IDs, and WebAuthn are also contributing to this long-awaited decline.”
