How much does an ad during this year’s Super Bowl cost?

Answer: $7 million for 30 seconds.

With the Super Bowl being one of if not the most watched events in the country, it’s no surprise that the advertisements during the event get a lot of attention. So much so, in fact, that Super Bowl ads have basically become a culture all their own. And only the wealthiest can afford them.

Case in point: The Wall Street Journal reported this week that OpenAI, the company behind the wildly popular generative AI chatbot ChatGPT, is planning a lengthy Super Bowl ad this year. According to “people familiar with the matter,” the company planned to purchase a 60-second ad slot during the big game. That may not sound like a long time in the grand scheme of things, but when ad spots are going for $7 million for just 30 seconds of air time, it’s a lot. OpenAI has positioned itself as a front-runner in the growing AI race, and it’s evidently willing to shell out a lot to stay there.
