How much time and money do you waste during your commute?

Answer: There’s now a tool that can tell you.

traffic
As if your commute wasn’t bad enough, now there’s a tool where you can calculate how much it’s costing you in time and money. Mapping and location tech company TomTom has released its 2022 traffic data along with an interactive tool to let you filter it to a more granular level.

TomTom’s tool lets you narrow the data down to one of 389 cities worldwide, including 80 here in the U.S. From there, you can see the average travel time in that city for a set number of miles for 2022 and compare those numbers to the year prior. For example, it shows that drivers in New York City averaged 25 minutes to go six miles, a 70-second increase over 2021. It also shows how much money those drivers spent on fuel, $461, as well as how much of that was specifically due to congestion, $111.

The tool has even more fun data points, showing things like what was the worst day to travel in the chosen city in 2022 (for New York it was Oct. 6, when it took 30 minutes and 30 seconds to go about six miles). And you can filter by the type of car you drive, so you can see the data for electric vehicles or diesel engines in addition to standard gas cars.
