According to OpenAI, Americans are flocking to ChatGPT in droves for advice as they file their taxes. On Tuesday, the day before Tax Day, the company released some stats that show just how much people are relying on its chatbot for tax help.
All tax-related searches on ChatGPT in Q1 of 2026 were up four times that of Q1 in 2025. In a chart shared on X, OpenAI revealed the top themes of people’s tax-related queries. One-third were about earnings and withholdings, 30 percent were for help filing forms and using tax software, and 10 percent were about investments and retirement reporting.
It’s also worth noting that OpenAI included a small note at the bottom of its chart reminding users that “ChatGPT is not intended to replace professional advice.” People still seem intent on turning to the bots for help these days — a recent survey by Adobe found that “U.S. workers are 136 percent more likely to use AI for tax filing this year compared to last.”
