Is there a bike bell that you can hear even with noise-canceling headphones?

Answer: Yes!

Many of us have had this experience at some point — you’re out and about with your noise-canceling headphones on, and you almost hit or are hit by someone that you didn’t know was there because you couldn’t hear them.

But what if you could, without having to pause your music? That’s the idea behind Škoda’s new DuoBell bike bell. The brand teamed up with researchers from the U.K.’s University of Salford to develop a device that could penetrate the active noise cancellation (ANC) tech that most headphones and earbuds use today.

The key lies in what they dubbed the “safety gap” in the 750 Hz and 780 Hz frequency range. Their research found that ANC systems are unable to counter-phase sound waves within this range. They were then able to design a bell that emits a tone within this range, with the added ability to generate rapid irregular dings since those are also more difficult for ANC systems to counteract. In tests on the streets of London, pedestrians wearing ANC-capable headphones consistently heard the bell five seconds and 22 meters earlier than other bells.
