Is it really that surprising that cyber criminals will scam each other? They are criminals, after all.

The cybersecurity firm Sophos recently did an analysis to find out who scams the scammers, and how often it happens. The answer is all the time. The team looked at three popular cybersecurity forums: Exploit and XSS (both Russian language), and BreachForums (English), and they found that in the last year criminals using these forums lost a combined $2.5 million to their fellow criminals.

One common type of scam occurring here are rip-and-runs, in which sellers take money without providing a service or buyers don’t pay for what they get. People also get scammed a lot with fake or useless data, like one example where a seller sold data that was already publicly available. And then there are more sophisticated scams where people and accounts appear to be working together to defraud their fellow fraudsters.

It seems no one is safe online, not even the hackers.
