Engineers at the University of California, San Diego have invented a “nanosponge” that can safely remove dangerous toxins from the bloodstream – such as those produced by E. coli, poisonous snakes and bees.
So far these nanosponges have been studied in mice, and neutralize “pore-forming toxins,” which destroy cells by poking holes in their cell membranes, according to the university.
