What does the Navy do with its trash while out at sea?

Answer: It dumps it into the ocean

Some of the garbage produced onboard, like paper, metal and food waste, is regularly dumped into the ocean by the U.S. Navy. Other waste is compressed, melted or shredded on board, and stored for disposal on shore. Trash from a ship’s mess decks can amount to 150 bags per day, creating a sizeable challenge for those charged with keeping the ship clean and safe.

While throwing trash in the ocean is generally considered a bad thing to do, some ocean trash can result in favorable consequences. Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, Calif., is named for the countless beads of polished glass formed by dumped glass and other junk. The beach is visited by tens of thousands of tourists each year who take the glass as souvenirs. The glass is now disappearing and there is a movement, according to Wikipedia, to replace it.
