How long would it take for a zombie infection to wipe out Chicago?

Answer: about 60 days

Using a computer model that tracks the rate at which infectious diseases could spread, scientists from the Argonne National Laboratory have estimated it would take approximately two months for the Windy City to become infested with the undead.

The Chicago Simulation model (ChiSIM) was completed in 2011 to figure out how to deal with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a strain of bacteria that causes difficult-to-treat and potentially deadly infections. It has since been used to test other diseases like the flu and Ebola, and researchers are currently considering adapting it for the Zika virus.

Considering the way zombies are portrayed in the media (as no actual zombies have been discovered … yet), the model released a small set of zombies throughout the city. After coming in contact with “the bite,” there is a two-day incubation period before the infection takes control.

For those of you who are thinking, “I’ve seen The Walking Dead or 28 Days Later, I would definitely make it,” the researchers took that into account as well. Two parameters were added: The likelihood of being bitten and the likelihood of defeating the zombie. The most common result was for complete takeover in 60 days, which means there would be no living humans, nearly 2 million undead zombies and 500,000 dead zombies.
