The National Weather Service released a concerning video showing how quickly the smoke blew in on Wednesday and turned the New York City skyline into a scene from a "Mad Max" film. The air starts out relatively clear with a light layer of haze at 11 a.m. By 12 p.m., the air has turned to a murky beige color, and by 2 p.m. it has become orange and the outlines of the buildings are faint, giving it an eerie apocalyptic feel.
“Every part of New York state has experienced unhealthy air quality in the last 24 hours as a result of Canadian wildfires, and our No. 1 priority right now is keeping New Yorkers safe,” said New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday. New York is handing out 1 million free N95 masks to residents to help protect them from the smoke, and everyone is encouraged to remain indoors to reduce their exposure.

Those vulnerable to poor air quality, including seniors and young children, should limit time outdoors if possible.
