Wyoming recently became one of about 30 U.S. states that allows residents to take home roadkill for food. But state officials decided to go a step further and create an app feature to make the process quick and easy.

Nestled within the state Department of Transportation app, this new feature allows users to quickly document and claim deer, elk, moose, wild bison and wild turkey that have been accidentally killed on roadways. They must verify the species and that the animal was not killed illegally, and then they can take it home to eat.

In addition to facilitating a quick, on-site process, the app also allows state officials to ensure that people are following the rules. For example, roadkill cannot be claimed after dark, on interstate highways or in construction zones for safety reasons. Kills that occur within national parks also cannot be collected. Additionally, the data the app collects about what species are killed where should help inform and improve the state’s efforts to prevent wildlife deaths on roadways in the first place.
