According to Downdetector, the Internet’s favorite website for reporting Internet outages, X began experiencing massive outages in the early hours on Monday morning. The first occurred at about 2:30 a.m. PT, when more than 20,000 users reported that the social media platform formerly known as Twitter wasn’t working for them.

That initial outage appeared to be resolved after roughly an hour, only for another one to occur at about 6:30 a.m. PT. More than 40,000 users reported issues at that time. As of 10:30 a.m. PT, the service was reportedly working only intermittently for many users. X had not yet issued an official explanation for the outages, but its owner Elon Musk had comments.

The platform appeared to still be working enough for Musk to use it to share that the outages were the result of a cyber attack. He posted that “there was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X.” While there is not yet any other evidence that this is true besides Musk’s post, it would not be an unreasonable explanation as cyber attacks have only grown more prominent in recent years.
