Aviation’s IT woes continue. On Sunday night, Alaska Airlines and its subsidiary Horizon Air were forced to ground all flights due to a computer problem. At 11 p.m. EST, the airline requested a systemwide ground stop from federal aviation authorities. In a post on X, Alaska said the case was “an IT outage that’s impacting our operations.”
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the ground stop applied to all Alaska Airlines aircraft. The full stop was lifted at about 2 a.m. EST Monday, but Alaska cautioned passengers to expect delays throughout the day. As the fifth-largest airline in the U.S., Alaska Airlines transports more than 44 million passengers each year.
Travelers reported long delays on social media, particularly at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. One person said they had five gate changes, and CNN reported that some passengers were stuck on planes for hours. Alaska has not released any further details on what exactly caused the outage.
