At the beginning of the year, it was just the cover letter. Now, you can outsource the entire job application to artificial intelligence if you so desire. Software engineer Julian Joseph got an AI to submit 5,000 applications for him, with some success.
It started after Joseph was laid off for the second time in two years as job cuts have swept the technology industry. Faced with the daunting task of grueling job applications once more, he started looking for a way to ease the burden. Enter LazyApply, which offers an AI-powered job application service called Job GPT.
Joseph paid $250 for an unlimited lifetime plan and gave the bot some basic information about himself like skills and experience, as well as desired positions. Then he downloaded LazyApply’s Chrome extension on both his and his boyfriend’s computers and set the program loose on the web. By the next morning, it had applied to nearly 1,000 jobs for him. He ended up getting 20 interviews after the service applied to about 5,000 jobs, which is a hit rate of half a percent. Doesn’t sound like much, considering he landed the same number of interviews after manually applying to 200 to 300 jobs. But he says the time and hassle saved was well worth it.
