Here’s a sobering statistic for you: 97 percent of people can’t tell whether or not the music they’re listening to was created by artificial intelligence.

The numbers come from the popular music streaming platform Deezer, which surveyed 9,000 people from the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the U.K., France, the Netherlands, Germany and Japan. When asked to listen to a set of songs and determine if they had been created by AI, the majority answered incorrectly.

Their answers were more varied when asked how they felt about these results. 52 percent said they were uncomfortable with the fact that they couldn’t tell the difference, and 51 percent said they believe AI will lead to more low-quality, generic-sounding music. Additionally, 80 percent answered that they thought AI music should be clearly labeled as such. “The survey results clearly show that people care about music and want to know if they’re listening to AI or human-made tracks or not,” said Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier.
