With the busy holiday travel season upon us, it’s important to remember that while that free airplane Wi-Fi may be convenient, it may be safer to stay off of it. In a recent survey of American travelers, Forbes found that a whopping 67 percent of those who have had their information compromised via public Wi-Fi said it happened on a plane.

This makes planes the most common location for U.S. travelers to experience a data breach. The next most common is hotels at 56 percent. Public transportation and cafes and/or restaurants tied for third place at 52 percent, followed by airports at 51 percent and retail stores at 26 percent.

Despite this, only 17 percent of travelers reported feeling unsafe using public Wi-Fi, and 34 percent said they didn’t use a virtual private network while doing so. Ten percent said they use public Wi-Fi internationally, while 31 percent said they did so domestically — 59 percent reported doing both.
