Are you even surprised? The dictionary reports that use of the term quadrupled in 2023.

The BBC asked OpenAI’s ChatGPT to comment, to which it responded: “AI’s selection as the word of the year by Collins Dictionary reflects the profound impact of artificial intelligence on our rapidly evolving world, where innovation and transformation are driven by the power of algorithms and data.”

There were a few other tech-focused contenders for the top spot at Collins this year. The dictionary considered “deinfluencing,” which refers to the act of warning social media followers to avoid certain products or choices. There was also “ULEZ,” an acronym for an “ultra-low emission zone” or an area in which only low-emission vehicles don’t have to pay a fee or toll to enter.
