What unsettling skill can Alexa master in less than one minute?

Answer: Mimicking any voice she hears.

Big tech is at it again, putting brilliant minds to work to bring us something that, well, no one really asked for. At its re:MARS conference June 22, Amazon revealed that its voice assistant, Alexa, can now mimic any voice after listening to it for less than a minute.

Amazon chose to highlight the supposed usefulness of this feature in giving Alexa the voice of your deceased loved ones. The company played a demonstration video in which a child asks Alexa to finish reading a story in the voice of her late grandmother, and Alexa obliges.

Of course, there are a lot of other ways in which this feature might be fun, such as playing pranks and the like. Imagine how freaked out your friend would be if Alexa unsuspectingly replied to their request in their own voice. Amazon did not state when the feature might be available to the masses, so we’ll probably have to wait a while before we can try it for ourselves.
