What’s the deal with Apple’s new tech cleaning cloth?

Answer: Not sure exactly, but the Internet is loving it.

Apple held a big event to announce a slew of new products this week, the highlight of which was supposed to be the new versions of the company’s computers like the MacBook Pro. But they threw something else into the mix that the Internet has been having an absolute field day with: a $19 polishing cloth.

Let the jokes and snarky comments from tech journalists ensue. There’s even a polishing cloth roast being hosted on Reddit.

Apple claims this wildly expensive piece of cloth is designed to clean “any Apple display, including nano-texture glass, safely and effectively.” The aforementioned nano-texture glass, only available for the Pro Display XDR and the 27-inch 2020 iMac, is reportedly very delicate and can be damaged by other cloths. But these devices reportedly already come with the special cleaning cloth if you choose to purchase the nano-texture version.

Perhaps the most entertaining part of the whole thing, aside from the fact that someone might buy one of the cloths, is the fact that Apple felt compelled to provide a list of compatible products on its website. Despite the company’s claim that the cloth works with “any Apple display,” not every Apple product with a display is listed. Guess you’re out of luck if you wanted to drop $19 to clean the screen of your iPhone 5 or 2013 entry-level iPad.
