It’s become so widespread, in fact, that, per Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen, “we’re at the level where we can share more of that power with more Australians.” Beginning in July 2026, residents in certain parts of the country will get up to three hours of free electricity per day.
Where are residents going to get free electricity?
Answer: Australia.
The Land Down Under is proof that widespread solar adoption really can lower energy prices — so much so that you could end up with free electricity sometimes. Solar installations cost about a third the price in Australia as they do in the U.S., and more than 1 in 3 homes there now have solar panels.

The Solar Sharer plan will initially be available to everyone in New South Wales, South Australia and southeastern Queensland, but it should roll out to more locations in the future. Residents must choose to participate, and they must have a smart meter installed. But, you don’t have to have your own solar panels, meaning those who live in apartments or other buildings not suitable for solar panels can still get the free juice.
