Though it’s not unreasonable to consider that similar stats might be seen in the U.S.

A study by the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) in London has found that traveling by electric vehicle emits two-and-a-half times the amount of CO2 than the same trip on one of the country’s greenest trains. That’s still better than plug-in hybrid or gas-powered vehicles, which emit four and nine times more carbon, respectively.

According to RDG’s data, traversing the 400 miles from Edinburgh, Scotland, to London Kings Cross would emit 116kg of CO2 in a diesel car, 31.8kg in a battery car and 12.7kg per person by train. Unfortunately though, the greenest option isn’t the cheapest. A single fare without pre-booking on the main train operator for that route would cost £183. Comparatively, it would cost about £50 for a small gas car, and even less for an electric vehicle.
