AI chatbots have become extremely popular in the last year, but which one is the most popular? TechRadar’s Lance Ulanoff set out to find out, but not from the human users — he asked the bots themselves. He asked each of the major AI chatbots if it was the most popular, and while none of them gave a direct answer, their responses were still quite interesting.
Meta AI acknowledged that it was a popular chatbot, but it didn’t go so far as to name itself the people’s favorite. Instead, it acknowledged that there are a lot of varying factors that go into judging where it stands with the masses, such as usage, name recognition and personal preferences. Google Gemini took a fairly similar approach, naming the best-known chatbots and acknowledging that “each AI model has its own strengths and areas of expertise and their popularity can vary depending on the specific use case and user preferences.”
ChatGPT also told Ulanoff that a lot of things go into judging popularity, but the start of its response (“It’s hard to say definitively if I’m the most popular AI, ...”) suggests that it might think so even if it isn’t willing to say it. Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity’s Claude also gave similar answers, acknowledging that people like them but that determining the favorite is hard to do. Ulanoff did note that when he turned to the users on Threads and X, the large majority of people named ChatGPT as the AI they used the most.
