Answer: Tuesday.

It turns out that the day of the week on which you book your flight can impact the price of the ticket. Google Flights has crunched the numbers and determined that clicking “book” on a Tuesday can save fliers an average of 1.3 percent compared to doing it on a Sunday, which is the most expensive day for booking air travel. While 1.3 percent may not be much, any savings is still savings.

As far as the cheapest day to actually fly, if you guessed “not on the weekends” you win a prize (the prize being the knowledge that you are correct). Flying on Friday, Saturday or Sunday is on average 13 percent more expensive than on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. That goes up to 20 percent if your destination is not international.

It also shouldn’t surprise anyone that direct flights will cost you 25 percent more financially than layovers (the mental toll of layovers is another story). Google also found that booking travel for Christmastime is cheapest if done 58 days before the holiday. And if you’re flying to Europe, your best savings can be found 94 days before your departure date.
