Which major social media app is now blocked in Russia?

Answer: Instagram.

Social Media
Russia has continued to crack down on news and social media platforms in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine, this time putting Instagram in its crosshairs. The Meta-owned image-based social media app is the company’s second most popular in Russia after WhatsApp, with a reported 166 million downloads since 2014. It’s three times as popular as Meta’s Facebook.

Roskomnadzor, the country’s telecommunications regulator, stated that blocking Instagram was in response to Meta adjusting its content policies to allow users to post calls to violence against Russian soldiers in light of the invasion. Roskomnadzor is accusing Meta of encouraging violence against the Russian people with these new policies.

Meta Global Affairs President Nick Clegg stated that the decision was not made to encourage violence, but rather to allow people to speak out “as an expression of self-defense.”

“The fact is, if we applied our standard content policies without any adjustments, we would now be removing content from ordinary Ukrainians expressing their resistance and fury at the invading military forces, which would rightly be viewed as unacceptable,” he said.
