Whether we’re aware of it or not, we all rely on undersea data cables to connect us to the rest of the world. The current network of cables transmits more than 95 percent of all the telecommunication data traveling between continents.

Meta is planning to add to this network in a big way. The company has announced that it will be installing a new undersea cable that will be not only the longest but also the largest. The high-capacity fiber-optic cable will have 24 fiber pairs, the largest ever built. And it will span an impressive 31,000 miles, which is over 6,000 miles more than the Earth’s circumference at 24,901 miles.

The cable will connect five continents, linking the U.S., Brazil, India, South Africa and Australia. The plan is to lay it on the seabed to a depth of up to 4.3 miles. The sections in shallower waters will be buried to prevent any interference.
