Why are artists currently mad at Marvel Studios?

Answer: Because Marvel used AI to generate art.

Marvel Studios launched its latest television series, “Secret Invasion,” on the Disney+ streaming service on Wednesday, and there’s one thing about it that some people are really not happy about. It’s been confirmed that the opening credits sequence was generated by artificial intelligence, and human artists are not happy about it.

“‘Secret Invasion’ intro is AI-generated,” wrote Jeff Simpson, a visual development concept artist who worked on the show. “I’m devastated, I believe AI to be unethical, dangerous and designed solely to eliminate artists’ careers.” Director Ali Selim confirmed the use of AI to Polygon, saying that the opening sequence was done by Method Studios, a VFX company.

Selim did not say what AI tool specifically was used and admitted that he didn’t “really understand” how it worked. He said they would feed it “ideas and themes and words” and then it would “go off and do something. And then we could change it a little bit by using words, and it would change.” Marvel had yet to comment on the backlash as of Wednesday afternoon.
