Answer: To test it.

Ford wants you to know that its new electric vehicle charging adapters are dependable. Like, really dependable. You could drive right over that thing and it will still work. Ford even did so just to prove it.

One year ago, Ford started offering a North American Charging System (NACS) Fast Charging Adapter so that users would be able to top up their Ford EVs at any charging station that uses NACS. This includes all Tesla Supercharger stations, the most extensive network of EV fast chargers in the U.S. And drivers are using them, with 140,000 units shipped and 20 percent of Ford charging visits away from the home happening at Supercharger stations.

This week, Ford announced the second generation of that charging adapter, co-developed with Lectron. In addition to its aforementioned durability, which Ford proved by running one over with one of its F-150 Lightning electric trucks, the new adapter is more durable, ergonomic and easier to use. It can withstand snow and rain or being submerged in water, and it features a vehicle interlock system so it won’t accidentally become unplugged while charging.
