Just when we thought we would get a few days without any big news about Facebook, 2021 has decided to once again prove that nothing is certain anymore. An unnamed source has broken the news that the social media giant will be announcing a major company restructuring next week that will include a new name.

For those of you who remember when Google rebranded under parent company Alphabet in order to expand beyond being just a search engine, it sounds like Facebook is going to make a similar move. The rumor mills have been working overtime, but most of the speculation has been that the new name and restructuring will likely focus on what Facebook is calling the metaverse.

Earlier this year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company planned to “effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.” Not to be confused with Marvel Studios’ multiverse, the metaverse, according to Zuckerberg, is “an embodied Internet where instead of just viewing content, you are in it.”
