Why is ‘sushi terrorism’ trending on social media?

Answer: Because some people are monsters.

The phrase “sushi terrorism” began trending on social media recently after a number of videos went viral of people being awful in sushi restaurants.

The restaurants in question are conveyor belt sushi chains in Japan. The videos show young customers committing the sushi terrorism by doing things such as licking soy sauce bottles and dinnerware meant for other diners.

The restaurants are responding by installing new technology to better surveil customers in order to prevent such actions. Kura Sushi is bringing new features to the cameras it already uses to monitor the conveyor belts in order to establish customers’ bills. Beginning in March, the cameras will include AI-based monitoring systems to detect suspicious behavior like randomly opening and closing plate covers. Employees will be alerted when any suspect behavior is detected.
