Will a new data center from Google cool itself without water?

Answer: Yes!

Data centers’ water needs are a top concern for communities where these facilities are going up, especially since tech companies are prone to building them in already water-stressed areas. So Google’s latest solution is to build a data center that doesn’t need water to keep itself cool.

The company is planning to build a campus in Wilbarger County, Texas, that will use “advanced air-cooling technology” instead of relying on good ol’ H2O. This means that any water consumption by the facility will go “to only critical campus operations like kitchens” and not the thirsty computers.

The center should also put less of a strain on the area’s electricity grid than current facilities. Google has partnered with energy provider AES to provide power to the center from new clean energy plants. These will be built alongside the data center as a co-located project.
