Will we lose TikTok this week in the U.S.?

Answer: Probably not.

There’s another deadline looming in the ongoing TikTok drama. The popular social media app has been facing a total ban in the U.S. unless it is sold to an American company away from its China-based owner. However, the deadline for that ultimatum has been extended numerous times by the current federal administration. But the latest extension is approaching its end this week, without another one in sight.

Wednesday, Sept. 17, is the day that TikTok is technically supposed to go dark in the U.S. unless a deal for American ownership becomes official. But President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday, where the two are expected to discuss the fate of the platform. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the U.S. and China have reached a preliminary deal and “commercial terms have been agreed upon.”

Therefore, it’s likely that the two presidents will finalize an agreement in their conversation this week. Since it is happening after the deadline, there is a chance that TikTok will be temporarily unavailable later this week, but it is unlikely to be a permanent loss of the platform.
