Anti-Theft Software Helps Police Track Down Laptop

Information and identity theft due to a stolen computer is on the rise, and the importance of data protection and recovery is becoming more apparent.

thief broke into the office of an insurance broker in Lima, Ohio, recently and stole several items, including a laptop containing sales information. Fortunately for insurance broker, the computer had the CyberAngel tracking software installed on its hard drive.

That night, the stolen computer was used and started sending covert alerts to The CyberAngel Security Monitoring Center, providing the location details from where that computer was being used. CSS, Inc. alerted local law enforcement authorities and provided them with the location information to be able to secure a search warrant for the premises. The thief was arrested, and confessed to another 10 burglaries of businesses in the area. The police not only recovered the stolen computer, but also many items stolen from several of the other burglaries.
