New systems will have to meet the standard in January 2006 while federal agencies will have a year to upgrade existing systems to be comply with the new standard

When the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 200 becomes mandatory in January 2006, federal agencies will be required to add 17 minimum controls to their computer systems and major applications, Ron Ross, FISMA implementation project leader at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, said at a recent workshop sponsored by the Potomac Forum in Washington, D.C.

A draft version of FIPS 200, based on NIST special publication 800-53, is expected to be released by the end of June. After that, the Commerce Secretary is expected to sign a final version of the standard; and beginning in January 2006, all new federal computer systems will be required to comply with FIPS 200 while agencies will have a year to make existing systems FIPS 200-compliant, Federal Computer Week reported
