Graduate Students Discover Security Flaws in Unix

Forty-four security flaws found affect applications that vary in popularity

Students studying computer security at University of Illinois at Chicago under computer scientist, Daniel Bernstein, discovered 44 security holes in Unix applications. The discovery of the bugs was part of an assignment in which each student was required to find ten flaws in Unix applications. One requirement for the bugs reported was that they had to be in programs that were "used somewhere," Bernstein said, though he said the programs varied in popularity, CNET news.com reported. Full details of the security flaws are available from the Web site of James Longstreet, a student in Bernstein's class.
