Keeping an Eye on Sex Offenders

Orange County, Calif., has launched an interactive Web site that provides the approximate locations of all serious and high-risk sex offenders in the county.

COSTA MESA, CALIF. - Orange County, Calif., has launched an interactive Web site providing the approximate location of all serious and high-risk sex offenders in the county.

The site was up and running on November 1, just weeks after the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to move forward with the Internet site. "By increasing public awareness of the presence of sex offenders in our community, we are taking a major step toward enhancing public safety," said Supervisor Todd Spitzer.

In allowing the Orange County Sheriff's Department to get the site up and running immediately and use an existing application, the site will cost less than half as much as building and maintaining this capability in-house. This also allows smaller cities to participate without having to implement expensive technology or acquire specialized expertise.

Known as CommunityView for Megan's Law Offender Information, the map is accessible at www.oc.ca.gov. The map is color-coded to differentiate between high-risk and serious offenders. Citizens can search by address or intersection, or select a location from a comprehensive list of all libraries, parks schools, and shopping centers in the county.
