"We know that there may be some questions that arise throughout the day," Ater said. "We have 37 parishes that are using the new system for the first time and we will have support staff either on site or in the near vicinity to assist the clerks of court and their staff throughout the process of transmitting the election returns to our office after the close of polls."
On Sept. 30, for the first time, all voters in every parish will use the AVC Advantage Voting Systems for election-day voting. Since 2005, federal funds awarded through the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA) were used to purchase the voting systems for the entire state. Twelve parishes already voted on this system in previous years and another 15 parishes were able to use the new system in local elections held earlier this year.
The new AVC Advantage Voting Systems are wheelchair accessible and every precinct will have an audio bay available for voters with disabilities. Instructions on how to operate the new voting system, and other information concerning the election are available on the Secretary of State's Web site.
