Minnesota Gov. Orders Security Review of State Web Sites

Department of Administration to conduct examination of all security systems

Following a Legislative Auditor's report outlining security concerns with the Department of Public Safety's license tab renewal Web site, Governor Tim Pawlenty directed Commissioner of Administration Dana Badgerow on Thursday to conduct a thorough security review of all executive branch Web sites.

"It is important to take prudent steps to ensure the security of the public's resources," Governor Pawlenty said. "The problems discovered in the security audit are some of the very issues that prompted the steps we are taking with our Drive to Excellence reform initiative. This issue should serve as a significant call to action for our commitment to coordinated enterprise-level management."

Currently the state operates many service delivery Web sites including sites operated by Health and Human Services, Transportation, Natural Resources, and Public Safety for example. The Department of Administration sets policy and operates many of the state's core computer operations.

"The Auditor's report makes clear that security must be addressed," Commissioner Badgerow said. "We will be working aggressively to ensure and maintain the safety of our systems."

Pawlenty's Chief of Staff, Dan McElroy, also issued a directive to agency heads asking them to provide the necessary resources to conduct and cooperate in this review.

Earlier this month, Governor Pawlenty launched phase one of the "Drive to Excellence" initiative which includes an effort to align government resources and bring private sector solutions to the management of state government's information technology systems.
