Nevada Receives National Grant to Improve Criminal History Records

$384,000, as part of the National Criminal History Improvement Program

Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn recently announced that the Department of Public Safety has received a $384,000 federal grant from the Bureau of Justice Statistics as part of the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP).

The Bureau of Justice Statistics provides direct financial and technical assistance to states to improve criminal history and other related records. It also helps states develop the necessary infrastructure to allow them to connect to national record check systems, both to supply information and to conduct the requisite checks.

The funds will allow Nevada to:
  • Support integration efforts as part of the Multi-County Integrated Justice Information System. This involves integrating the justice information from the operating systems of participating entities in four counties and transmitting criminal case dispositions and other required criminal justice information to the criminal history repository.

  • Support activities to reduce disposition backlog at the criminal history repository.

  • Provide equipment for the Department of Public Safety's Network Encryption Project, which will allow the state to complete network encryption of the law enforcement network and meet established deadlines for NCIC security policy.

  • Provide personnel support for program administration of the National Criminal History Improvement Program.
The goal of the NCHIP is to improve the nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality and accessibility of criminal history record information and by ensuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and noncriminal justice background check systems.
