Telephone Scam Reported in Albuquerque, New Mexico

The scammer states the consumer had a claim against a medical-type company, however, in order to "verify who is entitled to the claim," the consumer is asked to provide his bank account information.

A telephone scam is currently being reported in the Albuquerque, New Mexico, area. The scam involves a call from an individual posing as a representative from "The Fraud Division." The phone number reported by the consumer's caller ID has a 505 area code and is now "no longer in service."

The scammer identifies himself as "Fred Smith from the Fraud Division" and states the consumer had a claim against a medical-type company a couple of years ago in the amount of $486.00. However, in order to "verify who is entitled to the claim," the consumer is asked to provide his bank account information.

Each time the consumer asks a question, the response from the caller is either, "I just want to give you your money" or "Don't you want your money?"

The scammer has a foreign accent and states he is calling from New York.

If you receive a call like this, do not give out any personal or private information. The result of doing so could be identity theft or monetary loss.
