Wireless State Fair Demonstration Connects Missouri Families to Soldiers in Iraq

Serves as proof of concept for future statewide implementations

A 10-day demonstration of a secure wireless communications network will conclude Aug. 20 at the Missouri State Fair. The goal of the exercise -- sponsored by Fortress Technologies, the Missouri Research and Education Network, National Guard, Missouri School Boards Assn. and the University of Missouri Extension -- is to demonstrate the versatility of a secure broadband wireless communications architecture in providing voice, video and data capabilities for a number of statewide scenarios.

As part of the demonstration, the team is leveraging the wireless solution to connect soldiers serving in Iraq with their families onsite at the Missouri State Fair -- providing real-time, face-to-face conversations. Senator Kit Bond also personally thanked the deployed soldiers for their service and recognized the sacrifices made by family members. Additionally, the state fair demonstration showed how wireless communications can provide educational course content to local schools and libraries from a centralized location.

"In conjunction with the Fortress team, we were able to utilize secure wireless networking solutions to provide family video conferences to our troops stationed abroad," said Keith Crumley, executive director, Jefferson City, TCRC -- University of Missouri Extension. "These solutions can also be used across Missouri in our school system, enabling more flexible access to educational and training content. This demonstration at the state fair certainly serves as a 'proof-of-concept' for future statewide implementations."

Fortress is working with Nortel Government Solutions, a systems integrator, in the exercise. The Fortress/Nortel architecture being used in the demonstration integrates Wi-Fi and WiMAX transmissions with high-assurance security.
