NIST Guides Discuss Ways to Improve Handheld Device Security

Reports discuss smart cards and location-based authentication

The National Institute of Science and Technology has issued two reports aimed at improving the security of data stored on handheld devices. The first, titled Proximity Beacons and Mobile Device Authentication and designated NISTIR 7200 discusses the use of location-based authentication. This type of authentication uses signals from wireless beacons to determine the location of the device and whether or not it is outside of a predetermined boundary. If the device is outside the predefined boundary, then access can be denied or additional authentication may be required.

The other publication, Smart Cards and Mobile Device Authentication, also known as NISTIR 7206, describes two smart cards that use standard interfaces found on mobile devices to authenticate the device so that an additional reader is not needed. art card readers.
